Amateur Radio operators who are interested in volunteering with Lane County ARES must initially pass an interview with the ARES leadership, pass a background check, and then undergo basic training in emergency communications techniques and equipment. Thereafter, volunteers accepted into Lane County ARES must meet certain continuing education requirements and meet minimum annual activities with the ARES unit.

- IS-100.B: Introduction to Incident Command System, ICS-100
- IS-200.B: ICS for Single Resources and Initial Action Incidents
- IS-700.A: National Incident Management System (NIMS) An Introduction
Optional courses:
- IS-800.B: National Response Framework, An Introduction
- ARRL Introduction to Emergency Communication (EC-001)
